“Basket-ball-belly!” Laughing out loud as only a boy of ten years old can, I pointed at my dad and called out the name again… “Basket-ball-belly.” He said, “You better watch out what you call me, because one day it will you being called fatso, tubby, or basket-ball-belly yourself.”
Fast forward thirty-three years, on one of my dad’s yearly pilgrimages to visit me at my home in sunny Florida, it was my own father laughing and calling me… Basket-ball-belly!
Yep, it had happened. What every man deep inside fears the most; I had become as fat as my dad. How had this happened? When did it happen? How did I let myself get this way? If you’re reading this, undoubtedly you’re asking yourself the same questions. At 18, when I graduated high school, I weighed a whopping 136 pounds. How in the world did I gain 146 pounds in just 27 years? That’s an average weight gain of just 5 pounds a year. Basically I’d gained an entire other person in weight.
